The Western Nebraska Community College softball team placed eight players on the Omaha World Herald JUCO All-Nebraska softball team that was released over the weekend.
Sophomore Lauren Oxford, who is headed to West Virginia Tech to play softball next year, was named as captain of the team. Oxford finished the year with a .526 batting average, fourth in the NJCAA.
Oxford earned distinction as a first team catcher. Oxford finished her sophomore year with 65 runs scored and 77 RBIs. She also had 22 doubles, eight home runs, and seven stolen bases.
Other Cougars earning first team status included freshman Madi Jackson at first base, sophomore Celyn Whitt at second base, freshman Julia Suchan as an outfielder, sophomore Jasmine Wessel as a utility player, and freshman Ashley Thomas as a pitcher.
Jackson finished the year with a .494 batting average while Whitt batted .442. Wessel, who will be attending Metro State along with Whitt next year, batted .489 on the year.
Suchan hit .431 from the second hole while also playing right field.
Thomas finished the season with a 28-14 pitching record.
WNCC finished 38-16 this season under the guidance of first-year coach Katelyn Groves.
WNCC also had a former player make the Small College first team. Kelsey Bernhardt, who wrapped up her career at Doane College, was a first-team catcher on the OWH Small College team.
