Nayeli Diaz stepped in last semester to guide the Western Nebraska Community College softball team in an interim role. Now, the interim tag is gone. Diaz was officially named the Cougars' head softball coach in June.

"Being named the official head softball coach at WNCC is incredibly exciting," Diaz said. "The city of Scottsbluff and WNCC have so much to offer students and student-athletes, and I'm honored to lead this program moving forward."

Diaz has spent three seasons with the Cougars, including two as an assistant coach. She took the fall off, but when the college was looking for a head coach last November, she stepped into the role because she knew the returning sophomores.

"Taking over midway through the season was a smooth transition because I already had established relationships with the sophomores, and they were familiar with my coaching philosophy," she said. "The team was incredibly welcoming, and I enjoyed coaching a group that demonstrated outstanding resilience, determination, and commitment throughout the season. Those qualities will continue to be the foundation of our program as we move forward."

The Cougars finished last season at 25-26, but they finished the regular season winning 14 of their last 16 contests. Under Diaz, the Cougars' offense surged, hitting .324 as a team with 41 home runs, 12 triples, and 71 doubles. The previous season, the Cougars had just 15 home runs with a .339 batting average.

WNCC graduated six sophomores, but Diaz said the returning group and incoming class give the program strong momentum heading into next year.

"Our team is shaping up well for next season. We have seven returning players whom I'm extremely excited about," she said. "They have grown tremendously since I stepped into the interim head coach role, and each of them played an integral part in our success this past season. I'm also looking forward to welcoming our incoming freshmen into a positive culture where they can develop, compete, and help continue building the softball program."

Players returning include Mackenzie Tindall, Gracie Holm, Rory Weizenegger, Emma Murdoch, Abbey Arntsen, Hayley Blumenschein, and Jasmine Castro.

Diaz has signed 12 players so far for the upcoming season: Jocelyn Brown (Gering); Alexa Luethy (Cheyenne East, Wyo.); Maya Driver (Cheyenne Central, Wyo.); Kadyn Vu (Rapid City Stevens, S.D.); Gracie Garden (Vancouver, Wash.); Saydee Thornton (Grantsville, Utah); Carla Montoya-Aripez (Miami, Fla.); Maddie Perkins (Blanding, Utah); Grace Mauge (West Jordan, Utah); Danyela Mandujano-Saldana (Monterrey, Mexico); and Maya Jacobsen (Salt Lake City, Utah).

Diaz brings a strong playing and coaching background to the role. A four-year starter at El Segundo High School in Los Angeles, she went on to play at El Paso Community College from 2016–18 before transferring to the University of Texas Permian Basin, where she earned her bachelor's degree in sociology and communication.

Before joining WNCC, she served as an assistant coach at Lamar Community College in 2021 and Seward County Community College in 2022.

"Those experiences helped shape my coaching philosophy and commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the field."

Now officially at the helm, Diaz is eager to continue building the program.

"I am excited to continue building a positive culture at WNCC, developing competitive student-athletes, and growing the softball program for years to come," she said. "My focus remains on fostering resilience, accountability, and excellence both in the classroom and on the field."
