Athlete Of The Week
Female Athlete of the Week -- Softball Team-- Female Athlete of the Week for the Week Ending May 15 -- Cougar Softball Team -- The softball team had a fantastic season, capturing their seventh Region IX title in program history and first since 2016. WNCC opened tourney play with a walk-off single by Bri George in a 3-2 win over McCook. WNCC then downed Trinidad State before facing McCook in the championship and winning 14-5. The Cougars then hosted the district final against Butler and fell in two games to the No. 10 Butler in a close 5-4 defeat and then 8-5 to end their season at 35-20 and winners of 19 games since April 1.
Male Athlete of the Week -- Baseball Team-- Male Athlete of the Week for the Week Ending May 15 -- Baseball team -- The Cougar baseball team capped off a successful Region IX tournament with a second-place finish. WNCC opened with a win over Southeast Community College in a play-in game. WNCC then went to the double elimination tournament and captured two wins over Trinidad State 3-2 and Lamar Community College 6-4 to move into the championship. Sunday's championship games were close. WNCC was one out from capturing their second Region IX tourney title in program history, but Lamar came back to win 6-5 in 11 innings. Lamar then won the if-neccessary game to advance to the district payoffs.
