STERLING, Colo. – Kalli Feddersen poured in 19 points and the Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team opened the second semester in style with an 81-47 win over Northeastern Junior College Friday in Sterling, Colo.
The win was the Cougars 13th of the season and moves WNCC to 3-0 in Region IX South play.
Feddersen was one of three players to finish with double figure scoring. Ozge Yarga finished with 15 points, including two 3-pointers and Mikayla Gonzales 12 points.
The contest between the two NJCAA national tournament qualifiers a year ago was close in the first quarter as WNCC held a slim 15-13 lead. After that, though, the Cougars opened up the offense jumping out to a 20-15 lead and went on to lead 40-23 at intermission.
WNCC never let up on the gas pedal in the second half, outscoring the Plainswomen 27-16 in the third quarter for a 67-39 lead.
WNCC shot 44 percent from the field, but it was their free throw shooting that was sparkling, connecting on 81 percent (13 of 15).
WNCC's defense also stepped up, holding NJC to 31 percent shooting and forcing 25 Plainswomen turnovers.
WNCC, 13-2, will be back in action today when they travel to face Lamar Community College at 2 p.m. Lamar dropped an 81-65 contest to Eastern Wyoming College on Friday.,
