The Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team led from start to finish of its 79-54 win over the Adams State junior varsity during the WNCC Classic on Friday night at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff.
The Cougars, who led by as many as 27, improved to 5-2 on the season with the win.
Sladjana Rakovic poured in a game-high 18 points to lead WNCC in scoring. The University of Wyoming recruit finished 6 of 9 from the field overall and sank 6 of her 8 free throws.
Joining Rakovic in the double-figure scoring column was Olivia Wiberg with 10 points. Jaleesa Avery followed with nine points and Anastacia Johnson had eight.
Every WNCC player who entered the game managed to get in the scoring column as the Cougars finished the game shooting 47.7 percent from the floor. WNCC was 0-for-10 from behind the 3-point line. The Cougars converted 17 of their 30 free throws.
WNCC held a slim 36-35 edge on the glass in the contest. Melisa Kadic led the way with six rebounds. Rakovic, Bree Paulson, and Giovanna Silva all followed with five boards each.
The Cougars handed out 16 assists overall. Rakovic, Johnson, and Zeynep Canbaz all dished out three assists each.
Canbaz had a solid performance on the defensive end of the court as she totaled seven steals. Paulson and Wiberg added two steals. Deniz Dalkiran blocked a pair of shots. The Cougars held Adams to 31 percent shooting overall.
WNCC led 18-6 after the opening quarter before holding a 37-18 advantage at halftime.
The Cougars will be right back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Central Wyoming College to close out the WNCC Classic.
