There will be a full slate of basketball this weekend at Western Nebraska Community College as the Cougar women's basketball team gets set to host the Fairfield Inn Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday.
The Classic will have four teams in town for two games on Friday and Saturday. Friday's schedule has Eastern Wyoming College taking on Dodge City Community College at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Cougars taking on Laramie County Community College at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday's slate of games start at 1 p.m. when LCCC faces Dodge City while the Cougars battle EWC at 3 p.m.
Adelina Urtane, who had 12 points and seven rebounds in the game on Tuesday against EWC, said they just have to worry about how they play as they get ready for this weekend.
"We have to play our pace of basketball," Urtane said. "We need to control the game and focus on defense. We have to be aggressive in the paint."
The Cougars are 3-1 on the season with their only loss coming November 9 at home against Casper College 74-61. The three wins included an 82-45 win over Fort Hays Tech Northwest and then 92-47 over Central Wyoming College November 1 and 2. WNCC's other win was just this past Tuesday when they topped EWC 76-62 in a very physical contest.
Urtane said this team is still learning through the early season and are getting better each game they play.
"Every game we are learning more and more about our team and our strengths," Urtane said. "We haven't reached our potential yet."
LCCC enters with a 2-2 record and have won their last two contests over North Platte Community College 58-51 and then on Monday night, topped Northeastern Junior College 72-62.
EWC is 1-4 on the season with their only win coming November 9 when they topped McCook Community College 66-61.
Dodge City Community College comes in with a 3-1 record after some impressive wins. The Conqs opened with a 99-55 win over Western Texas College and then followed that up by beating No. 8 Odessa College 88-55. Dodge City suffered their first loss the next night to No. 7 New Mexico Junior College 84-66, but rebounded with a 9757 win over Frank Phillips College.
For the Cougars, Urtane said this team has many strengths and they should be a fun team to watch.
"We are playing hard," she said. "We want to win every single game. We get along well and we play for each other first."
After this weekend, the Cougars will be on the road next weekend at the CSI Classic in Twin Falls, Idaho, where they play Utah State- Eastern and the No. 8 College of Southern Idaho. They then return home to host Central Wyoming on Tuesday, November 26.
