GREAT BEND, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team captured two wins in the first day of the Barton Cougar Classic.
Kaila Tuisamatatele powered down nine kills and the Cougar women recorded a straight set 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 win over Pratt Community College.
Maldonado tallied nine kills as the Cougar women finished the second day with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-15 win over Clarendon College.
It was the Cougars fifth straight win as they get ready to face two more teams Saturday in the Barton Classic. WNCC will open with a match against No. 7 Indian Hills and then face the host Barton Community College.
In the opener, The Cougars finished with 35 kills in the three-set win. After Tuisamatatele's nine kills, Sarena Bartley and Joise Maldonado each had eight kills. Brooke Kaawa tallied five while Jayme Commins followed with three.
Syenna Masaki finished with 23 set assists with two points and six digs, while Jayme Commins had eight assists, five points, and two ace serves
Also for WNCC, Kaawa added six points and seven digs; Genesis Benitez had seven points and 12 digs; Maldonado had eight points and two digs; Kirstee Trees had five digs; Sophie Lau had three digs; and Lauren Shaul had three digs.
The second game saw plenty of offense. Maldonado led the way with nine kills followed by eight from Kaawa, six from Bartley, and five from Tuisamatatele. Tuisamatatele also had six points, while Kaawa had five points, two aces, and seven digs.
Also for the Cougars, Commins finished with 21 set assists, six points, two aces; Masaki had eight set assists, five points, and two aces; Benitez finished with six points and 10 digs; Trees had five points and two digs; and Shaul had three digs.
