McCook – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team found the going tough Wednesday against McCook Community College in non-conference games, falling twice.
The first game saw McCook score in the first five innings as the Indians downed the Cougars 12-7. The second game saw McCook scored early and late to claim the 10-2 win.
WNCC will look to get on the winning track when they host Miles Community College on Monday and Tuesday at Cleveland Field. The games were originally slated for the weekend, but because of weather were moved to Monday and Tuesday beginning at noon.
The first game was close as McCook struck first with two runs in the first inning. WNCC came right back to tie the game with two in the second. WNCC loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two fielding errors. Ty Buetner singled in two runs, but that was all they could get.
McCook added a two more in the bottom of the second. Both teams added a run in the third. WNCC's run came on a Daniel Chavez lead-off home run. McCook led after three 5-3.
The Indians added four runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 12-3 lead. WNCC showed some fight as they mounted a late comeback as Will Harbison led off the sixth with a solo home run. The seventh saw Austin Cooper reach on a dropped third strike followed by Chavez getting plunked by a pitch. Harrison Hart scored one run with a single followed by Harbison ripping a double to score another run. Jase Satterfield scored the third run on a sacrifice fly, but that was all the Cougars could muster.
Harbison and Buetner each had two his in the contest. Harbison had two RBIs.
The second game saw the Cougars fall behind in the first inning after McCook scored three runs. WNCC got on the scoreboard with a run in the third to make it 3-1 after Garrison Burns walks and scored on a Vaughn Wilson sacrifice fly.
McCook followed with a single run in the third and then plated six more runs over the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to lead 10-1. WNCC added a single run in the seventh as Burns walked and scored on a Wilson double.
Chavez led the team at the plate with two of the team's six hits. Wilson and Payton Denny each had a double for the Cougars.
