The Western Nebraska Community College men's soccer team scored five, second-half goals to register a 6-0 Region IX conference win over Sheridan College Friday afternoon at the Landers Soccer Complex.
The Cougars, in posting the win, had six different players notch a goal on the day.
WNCC coach Todd Rasnic said it was a nice showing from his men's team on the day.
"It is about time [we score goals]," Rasnic said. "We have been in front of everyone's goal that we have played around 15 to 20 times in a game and haven't been able to get the final ball in. Today they found a little bit of composure, finishing well."
A big reason for the second-half slurry of goals was the Cougtars started to dictate the pace of the contest.
"They took over the rhythm and pace of the game," Rasnic said. "I credit that to putting a great deal of pressure on Sheridan."
The Cougars and Sheridan were in a battle in the first half. WNCC held just a slim 1-0 lead after Andre Matzuda took a pass from Matheus Campos in the 33rd minute for the only score.
The second half was all Cougars, taking control of the contest early scoring two goals in the first five minutes of the half. The first was an unassisted goal by Ricardo in the 47th minutes. Two minutes later, JP Santos booted in a penalty kick for the 3-0 lead.
WNCC wasn't through as Matheus Campos scored off an assist from Luan Abary in the 65th minute. Abary registered another assist as he found Francisco Gonzalez for another goal in the 75th minute.
The last goal was a sweet capper to the Cougars' scoring. Modou Jallow took a rebound off the Sheridan goalkeeper save and had a pretty wide-open shot and planted it in the back of the net.
While the score looked one-sided, the play was pretty close in the match. Sheridan managed seven shots and five corner kicks, while WNCC had 18 shots and six corner kicks.
WNCC (3-2) will look to add another Region IX win when they host Northwest College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Landers Soccer Complex.
Rasnic said that match will be tough.
"We have a big match tomorrow and don't read too much into it [what we did today]," he said. "We will have to see once we get under a different type of pressure of how we respond to that. I am cautiously looking at tomorrow that it will be a battle."
